Back to school dental tips

School is back! And hopefully this year our kids (and parents) will enjoy a normal school year with onsite learning, packed school bags, lunchboxes and school sport. With kids heading back it is also important to get back on track with their oral health. Here are some tips:

  1. Ensure regular 6-monthly dental visits with your dentist. Easy way to remember is summer/winter or autumn/spring school holidays. Dentist can ensure that teeth and gums are healthy, with sign of cavities or gum disease. They will also check on how the teeth are developing and erupting, catch any potential issues and recommend timely orthodontic treatment which can prevent problems later on.
  2. Develop a good dental routine at home. Brushing morning and evening with Fluoridated toothpaste and flossing once a day. Make it fun for kids with electric toothbrushes, dental apps to encourage good brushing or simply playing a song to ensure kids are brushing for long enough.
  3. Pack a healthy lunchbox. Avoid sweet and sticky treats like chocolate, lollies, dried fruit and roll-ups. Pack fresh fruit and veggies, cheese, plain crackers and protein-rich foods like chicken wraps, egg sandwiches, tuna and tzatziki/hummus dip. Encourage drinking water especially after eating.
  4. Have a professionally-made mouth guard ready for contact sport such as footy and basketball.
